Perched on a hilltop at about 3,100 meters on the Pamir Plateau, the Stone City of Tashkurgan is a ruined fortress with more than 2,000 years of history. It was once the seat of the ancient Puli Kingdom and an important stop for Silk Road caravans crossing between China and Central Asia. Today, visitors can walk among its crumbling stone walls and enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks. At the foot of the fortress lies the Golden Grassland, a wide wetland where the Tashkurgan River winds through meadows dotted with grazing yaks, sheep, and Tajik yurts. A wooden boardwalk crosses the grassland, which glows gold at sunrise and sunset and is one of the most photographed scenes in the region.
