Lugu Lake lies on the border between Yanyuan County in the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province and Ninglang Yi Autonomous County in Lijiang City, Yunnan Province. The lake’s water quality meets China’s national Class I standard for surface water and boasts exceptional clarity—rare not only in Yunnan but across the entire country. Its stunning natural scenery, combined with the unique cultural heritage of the Mosuo people, makes Lugu Lake an ideal travel destination. The shoreline is intricately indented, featuring 17 sandy beaches and 14 bays. Scattered across the lake are five fully detached islands, three peninsulas, and one island connected to the shore by a causeway—resembling from afar tiny green boats gently floating on the water’s surface. The Mosuo people’s distinctive "walking marriage" tradition has garnered significant attention in the tourism industry, and their matrilineal culture and social structure continue to thrive along the shores of Lugu Lake, earning it the poetic nickname “Kingdom of Women.”
