Gaotai Ancient Homes (高台民居) is a centuries-old Uyghur neighborhood perched on a loess bluff on the southeastern edge of Kashgar's Old City. Its mud-brick and timber houses were built up over generations, with families adding new levels as they grew, creating a striking jumble of stacked homes, overhead passageways, and winding alleys. The area is also known for its traditional earthenware pottery, a craft handed down here for hundreds of years. Seen from across the Tuman River, the weathered cliffside dwellings offer one of the most iconic views in Kashgar.
