Tucked away in Anshun, Guizhou, Benzhai is one of the best-preserved villages of China's distinctive "Tunpu" garrison culture, a living heritage that has been passed down for more than 600 years. Built during the Ming dynasty, the village grew out of the military garrisons and forced migrations that pushed into the southwest, and it's far more than just an old village. Almost everything here is built of stone: fortress-like houses, narrow deep lanes, and interlocking courtyards, all designed for defence. It's a rare chance to see what a Ming-dynasty garrison settlement actually looked like.
