Beyond Shanghai

This self-drive journey winds from Shanghai through the tea plantations and bamboo forests of Jiangnan, the gentle countryside south of the Yangtze. Along the way, you'll hike ancient trails, gaze over terraced tea fields, wander cool mountain streams, and settle into distinctive local guesthouses and the quiet, poetic rhythm of rural life. Before heading home, you'll spend a night in Wuzhen, East China's signature water town, where lanterns glow softly along timeless canals after dark. With its relaxed pace and blend of nature and culture, it's the perfect escape into the real eastern China — from vibrant cities to peaceful mountains and villages.

Honestly, this was one of those drives you don't forget. Just endless bamboo forests, these winding little mountain roads, and a home-cooked meal in pretty much every village you roll through. Even in summer, the air stays cool and fresh under all that green. I don't know where else you'd find a drive quite like this.
