Silk Road Odyssey

The Qinghai–Gansu Loop is a spectacular self-drive route traversing Qinghai and Gansu provinces, weaving together highland plateaus, alpine lakes, deserts, Gobi steppes, snow-capped mountains, grasslands, and forests—a dream road trip for many local travellers. Starting from Shanghai, the trip typically involves flying to Xining to pick up a rental car, then driving through Qinghai Lake, Chaka Salt Lake, Qarhan Salt Lake, Dunhuang (home of the Mogao Caves), Jiayuguan Pass, Zhangye’s rainbow-hued Danxia formations, and the grasslands of the Qilian Mountains before returning to Xining. Along the way, travellers experience emerald lakes, endless deserts, remote wilderness, dreamlike meadows, and the cultural legacy of the Silk Road—blending natural grandeur with ancient Buddhist and Tibetan heritage. The itinerary also recommends two shorted hikes for up-close views of western China’s towering peaks and forests.

We pulled over and realized we were crossing a no man's land. As far as the eye could see: flat, empty salt flats stretching to the horizon — a near-perfect plain of pale earth, dusted with patches of white frost. The brand-new highway cut through it like a dragon disappearing into the distance. Nothing about it felt real.
