Shangri-La Heights

Yunnan Province, located in China’s far southwest, straddles the Tropic of Cancer in its southern reaches and boasts remarkable climatic and topographical diversity—earning it the nickname “Kingdom of Plants and Animals.” The legendary Shangri-La is said to be found here. The recommended itinerary begins with a flight from Shanghai to Lijiang, where you’ll explore the ancient town’s charm before heading to the serene Lugu Lake to experience the unique matrilineal culture of the Mosuo people. Drive north to Shangri-La to visit Songzanlin Monastery and the sacred Balagezong area, then continue to Feilai Temple for the iconic “Golden Sunrise over Meili Snow Mountain.” Loop south to Dali to enjoy the views of Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake before flying back to Shanghai from Lijiang. This route connects alpine peaks, pristine lakes, old towns, and deep forests—offering a true cross-section of Yunnan’s stunning natural and cultural diversity.

Aren’t the roads spectacular? We had a wow factor around every corner. The twists and turns had us gasping in awe at the beauty.
The cameras don’t really do it justice. You’re going to have to come and see for yourself… We kept taking in the views and honestly pinched ourselves that we were there.
